zines – self-published booklets of any variety – are an accessible means to share, platform, and spread art, information, and education. from 1700’s political pamphlets to the riot grrrl movement of the 1990’s, zines time and time again give voice to anti-establishment and anti-capitalist circles often receiving no voice in mainstream media. as queer people refuse to adhere to established ideas of sex and gender, zines refuse to let institutions dictate what is published and shared.
ZINES ARE QUEER!! and this exhibition, in collaboration with moody, seeks to celebrate that through showcasing queer creatives in all of their facets – on zine pages, through their varied art practices, in their words, and even in mementos that influence what they do. in addition to the five milwaukee-based queer creatives showing work, visitors have the ability to interact with queer-centric zines exemplifying the breadth and diversity of the limitless zine community.
